 Selena Quintanilla Perez (Spanish pronunciation"se'lenakinta'nija'peres," 16, 1971 - March 31 1995) Also known as Selena is a famous American Tejano singer. Her contributions to music and fashion made Selena the "Queen" of Tejano music. She was among the most well-known performers of the Mexican-American community of the late 20th century. Billboard magazine placed her third on their 2020 list of "Greatest Latino Artists" Based on Latin album releases and Latin chart of songs. Because of her clothing choices media outlets have dubbed her the Tejano Madonna. Her fashion choices are what earned her the nickname "Tejano Madonna" by various media outlets. In the 80s, she often was accused of being a snob and was denied bookings in venues across Texas because she performed Tejano music, which was a genre that was dominated by males. After being awarded the Tejano Music Award in 1987 for Female Vocalist, she gained popularity. In 1989, she signed with EMI Latin and released her debut album entitled Entre a Mi Mundo (1992). Her brother was her primary music producer and writer. Entre a Mi Mundo was a top-ranked album on the US Billboard Regional Mexican Albums charts for eight months in a row. Its commercial success earned music critics the right to call it the "breakthrough" recording of her musical career. One of its songs, "Como la Flor" became one of her most popular tracks. Live! Live! Amor Prohibido was her 1994 album. It became one of the most popular Latin albums. It was widely praised as having been the cause of Tejano music's first commercially viable era as it became one of the most loved Latin music subgenres at the time.
